Goaltender Scott Wedgewood of the Colorado Avalanche has been impressive at the start of the season. While the starter Mackenzie Blackwood has recovered from an injury that he suffered over the summer, Wedgewood has stepped up and taken charge. Colorado has been in search of a true 1B goalie, and he is proving they have one. Compared to the start of last season, where Colorado was playing with Alexandar Georgiev, the situation is like night and day. Wedgwood has held them in games and made spectacular saves. Something that Avalanche fans could not fathom this time last year.

Through six games this season, Wedgewood has allowed only nine goals. This pales compared to the first four games of the 2024–25 season. With a combination of Georgiev and Justus Annunen, the Avalanche allowed 25 goals. With such a low number of goals allowed, there is no need to rush Blackwood back from rehab.

Wedgewood sits atop the NHL with his five wins. Of the four goaltenders that sit at the top of that list, he has the highest save percentage of .938. He sits alongside the likes of Logan Thompson, Thatcher Demko, Jake Oettinger, and Cam Talbot. These are some of the best goaltenders in the game at the moment. And because Wedgewood has been so good, among others on the team, the Avalanche are in first place. Compared to last season, they had no points, and goaltending was an enormous concern for the rest of the season.

Even if Wedgewood makes a mistake, he knows how to analyze what went wrong with him. He appeared on the post-game show for Altitude after Colorado’s 2–1 victory over the Utah Mammoth. The Altitude crew asked him to break down some shots, and the goal allowed, and then he went into a two-minute breakdown. Kyle Keefe stood there in disbelief and responded that it was some of the best analysis he had ever heard.

The benefit of having a 1B goaltender will be that the Avalanche will not have to put nearly as much stress on Mackenzie Blackwood. Wedgewood could easily take on 25–30 games like a true 1B should. This was the intention Georgiev and Annunen were with the Avalanche, but they could never keep their save percentage up. The only issue I see with this is that Trent Miner, who has yet to play a game this season, won’t get much time. He has not played with the Eagles, and if he is with Colorado, he will only see the bench.
