DENVER — One of the greatest modern rivalries in modern sports will match up again on Tuesday night in the Mile High City. The Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings meet up as the Avalanche kickoff a four-game home stand. Colorado has been trying to secure their spot in the playoffs for some time. The Red Wings have lost their way. The two have met only one other time this season on December 7. In that game, Cale Makar scored the deciding goal for Alexandar Georgiev to gain the win.
Colorado Avalanche (43-25-3) Previous Game
The Avalanche are coming off of what could have been one of the best comebacks for the Montreal Canadiens of the season. Colorado had taken 3–1 lead going into the third period and then everything broke down for the Avs. The momentum swung hard in the Canadiens’ favor. With the Avalanche worn down from two hard-hitting periods, Montreal peppered their net with shots.
Colorado survived the overtime period. At the urging of Jonathon Drouin, coach Jared Bednar selected Brock Nelson for the shootout. Nelson secured the victory and the two points to end the road trip.

Detroit Red Wings (33–31–6) Previous Game
The Red Wings played against the Utah Hockey Club on Monday night, so they will play on so tired legs. Just 1:58 in the game, goaltender Petr Mrazek had to leaving after making only one save. Driving toward the net, Dylan Guenther clipped Mrazek on the knee; then another Utah player clipped him in the head. Backup Alex Lyon entered the game and played brilliantly, stopping 17 of 18 shots he faced. Lyon also got some run support from the rest of the team as well. Detroit won 5–1 with goals coming from five different goal scorers.
Closer look at the injury that knocked Mrazek out of the game, as Guenther made contact with his knee and looks like Hayton hit his head. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/2Xq9SNUb77
