The Colorado Avalanche impressed in a big 9–1 win over the Edmonton Oilers in a fun Saturday night affair. They spoiled the home crowd’s celebrations in a massive way.

Nine goals is the most the Avs have scored in a game since 2022 against the Los Angeles Kings. All but six players got on the scoresheet, including some big names like Brock Nelson, Martin Necas, and Valeri Nichushkin.

Observations From the Mountaintop

This was a fun night all around for the Avalanche. Despite the slow start and being behind the eightball, they responded in kind. Cale Makar, Parker Kelly, Jack Drury, and Nathan MacKinnon all had a pair of goals. They made history in the first game in franchise history to have four players score multiple goals.

All four goals in the second period came from guys in the bottom-six, including Gavin Brindley, Drury, and Kelly’s two goals. His second goal was also a beauty for the team’s first shorthanded goal of the season. This does not include what was yet another disallowed goal from Gabriel Landeskog for offside.

Meanwhile, the defense in front of Scott Wedgewood stood tall. At the other end, Stuart Skinner’s night came to a close after giving up four goals on 13 shots. Wedgewood continued his brilliant start to the season with a 23-save performance. Between him and the eventual rise of Mackenzie Blackwood as the season goes on, it truly seems like the Avalanche have a true 1A/1B goaltending duo.

If there’s anything Colorado would like less of from this game, it’d be penalties. The referees called five penalties against the Avs, and Connor McDavid threatened them when he tallied a power-play goal just seconds in. But on the flip side, they scored their first shorthanded goal of the season. But also on the flip side, there were no power-play goals for the visitors in seven attempts. It didn’t matter, thanks to great play at 5-on-5.
