Scott Wedgewood was the start of a complete goaltender overhaul by the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche gained Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators for Justus Annunen and a fifth-round draft pick this summer. In only ten days, the Avalanche would trade for Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks.

The Avalanche always intended Wedgewood to be their backup goalie, and he fulfilled that role perfectly. He came in every few games to give Blackwood a night off and still gave the team a chance to win.

The Brampton, Ontario native, saw only four starts with the Predators before the trade to the Avalanche on November 30, 2024. In Nashville, Wedgewood was seeing some of his worst career numbers. His 3.69 goals-against average and .878 save percentage were on pace to be the worst in a seven year NHL career. But, once Wedgewood came to Denver, those numbers went right down. In 18 starts during the season, he had a 1.99 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

Those numbers would not come without their troubles, of course. On January 2nd, in a game against the Buffalo Sabres, he suffered a devastating injury. Parker Kelly pushed Sabre Zach Benson into Wedgewood and the Sabre recovered for a wraparound goal while Wedgewood was down in pain. The Avalanche eventually fought back in the game and won in overtime.

Wedgewood was key in several victories. He kept the Avalanche in the game with his calmness and leadership from the crease. Several players mentioned after he came to Denver that he was great to have in the locker room.

The veteran has one more year left on his contract that he signed while he was with the Nashville Predators. He sits at a very low $1.5 million cap hit. This will probably make room for the rookie Ilya Nabokov once he comes over from the KHL next spring.
