The Colorado Avalanche were without their captain Gabriel Landeskog for nearly three years. On Monday, he finished up a six-part docuseries that gave us an inside look at his comeback from knee surgery.
This series uniquely depicts a player’s recovery and return to the game. Landeskog shows sides of him that most hockey players rarely show. In Episode Four, Landeskog suffers a panic attack after introductions on opening night. The film crew was there all for it.
“I guess I wanted to show the human side of it,” Landeskog told the media after his first Colorado Eagles game. “And sometimes the comeback stories of athletes are injury videos of the athlete working out, and then they’re back on the ice or field or whatever. I wanted to show the human side of it, the tough times, the identity, identity questions that pop up. Yeah, everything that’s put to the test when you’re going through a hard time, and I think that’s what people can relate to.”
A touching scene in the final episode is when Landeskog gets on the floor to explain to his son, Lucas, that he will play for a different team that day. It was April 12, 2025, and he was about to leave to play for the Colorado Eagles against the Henderson Silver Knights (VGK). Landeskog was playing two games during a conditional loan and he would score the tying goal in game two.

As the episode moves on to Landeskog preparing for the Dallas Stars series, he talks over the emotions of the return. How he could not sleep before Game Three when he knew he was going to play. When he saw his kids and wife along the glass, and nearly broke down in tears. These are all things that most players are never willing to share. There were 1,032 days between Landeskog’s last game and his return, so nerves were to be expected. And there were 1,041 days between his goals. A moment in which he blackout and could not describe for the camera.

The perfect ending to the series would have been Landeskog raising the Stanley Cup. Having the summer to improve, not heal, is almost as good. Avalanche fans, “A Clean Sheet: Gabe Landeskog” is a must watch. Watching someone struggle and recover both mentally and physically is truly inspiring.
