The Colorado Eagles walked away from the weekday series with three of four points against the Calgary Wranglers (CGY). Colorado would see its fourth game in a row go into overtime, but one would not end in a result in their favor. Jack Ahcan once again played hero in the first game with a goal and three assists, but could not help in the second game.

Tuesday evening: 6–5 overtime victory

By Marie Sexton

Tuesday night’s game was a rollercoaster. The Eagles received a power play seven seconds into the game, which led to Jayson Megna scoring a power-play goal and giving them an early 1–0 lead. Matthew Stienburg added another tally seven minutes later. Calgary scored late in the period, but when Tye Felhaber added a goal five minutes into the second frame, it seemed like the game was well in hand.

But then, everything fell apart.

Calgary scored two goals within twenty-five seconds of each other. Less than three minutes later, they added a power play goal. And with 1:11 left in the period, they capped it off with a fourth goal, resulting in a 5–3 deficit for the Eagles going into the second intermission. This disastrous period could be blamed on multiple problems: players looking beyond the pass, resulting in turnovers; a general lapse of defense, making it too easy to get to the net; and Trent Miner not making a save or two that he might be expected to make. But regardless of the reason, the result was the same: a two-goal deficit going into the third period.

Previous articles have discussed the Eagles’ inability to come from behind. Before Tuesday night, they were 1–4–0–1 when trailing after the second period. But on Tuesday, they would flip that script. In the third period, the Eagles came out hard, dominated play, and Ronnie Attard scored a goal (only his second of the season) at 6:07.

Overtime Hero

They kept rallying and fighting, outshooting the Wranglers 17–2 in the period. They pulled Miner with 2:40 left to play. Thirty-three seconds later, Megna netted his second goal of the night, tying the game at 5–5 and sending the team to their third overtime in a row. And then, for the second time in three games, Jack Ahcan proved to be the hero, scoring the overtime game-winning goal at 3:14 of the period.

Thursday Afternoon: 3–2 overtime lose

By Brennan Vogt

The Wranglers’ wrath did not spare the Eagles, even though they improved a bit Thursday afternoon.

The first period was going well when Nikita Prishchepov scored his first goal of the season. It took some hard work from the rest of the line with Taylor Makar and Ivan Ivan, but they got it done. Not even two minutes later, Tye Felhaber added his ninth of the season with the help of Alex Barré-Boulet and Sean Behrens. But that was all the Eagles could squeeze out of the Wrangles on Thursday.

Calgary would strike back with three unanswered goals, all on the power play. Colorado kills 85.3 percent of their penalties, so this was not the norm for them. Jack Ahcan, one of the team’s best penalty killers, received a delay of game penalty, and William Strömgren scored on the opportunity.

Behrens’ double minor penalty led to Martin Frk scoring the sole goal during the second period’s power play. It was the game-tying goal and eventually led to overtime with no goals in the third.

Right at the beginning of the overtime period, TJ Tynan was called for interference. The Wranglers did not waste any time. Less than forty seconds later, former Colorado Avalanche Dryden Hunt buried a rebound off Isak Posch to win 3–2.
