LOVELAND, Colo.—The Colorado Eagles have been on a roll. Emerging victorious in seven of their last ten games, things are starting to click at just the right time.

From players on a point streak to a strong goaltending tandem, Colorado seems to have it all. The 6–2 victory over the Tucson Roadrunners (UTA) highlighted each of the team’s individual strengths.

Takeaways

The offensive game of the Eagles was unstoppable. Tucson netminder Matthew Villalta, along with the rest of the team, could not stop the onslaught of well-connected passes and effective zone entry.

Consistency was key to this victory, but there were several shining stars for the night. Both Jason Polin and Chris Wagner netted two goals. For Wagner, it marked the eleventh game in a row that he has added a point to the board.

The stellar performance started with putting 41 shots to the net, making the 28 from the Roadrunners seem like nothing at all. Villalta lacked support in front of the net, which contributed to the puck luck Colorado seemed to have.

The special teams thrived, which was needed considering the number of penalties being accrued by both teams. Wagner netted a shorthanded goal on the third attempt in the second period. It was a warmup for the shower of power play chances throughout the third period.

The third period was as action packed as it was chaotic. The Eagles scored four goals during the first two periods, and they minimized penalties. By the time the third period came to fruition, things got out of hand.

In the last period alone, there were 51 penalty minutes between both teams. Players dropped their gloves several times. Ice officials issued one game misconduct penalty for both teams and one sports misconduct penalty for the Eagles at the end of the game.

An easier opponent after splitting a series against the Bakersfield Condors and winning against the Coachella Valley Firebirds will help cushion the Eagles in their journey to a Division Championship.

There weren’t many areas where Colorado could’ve improved in this victory. However, cutting down on penalties and getting the rest of the team more engaged offensively would have taken their performance to another level.
