The Colorado Eagles have signed winger Tristen Nielsen to a one-year AHL contract. Nielsen spent the last four seasons with the Abbotsford Canucks (VAN). Although he was on an entry-level contract for the last two years, Nielsen saw no time with Vancouver. The Eagles have been very active this summer, signing several free agents to AHL contracts over the summer. They have filled the gaps left by several free agent departures, and this will be an excellent addition to the ranks.

Nielsen will start the season with 231 games of AHL experience. The Canucks have been on top of the Pacific Division every year, so Nielsen already has 36 games of playoffs experience. This includes last season, where he helped Abbotsford capture the Calder Cup in six games. During his four-year professional career, Nielsen has tallied 52 goals and 63 assists. In the playoffs, his role is less defined with seven goals and 10 assists.

Prior to playing in Abbotsford, Nielsen spent six seasons in the Western Hockey League. He split the time between the Calgary Hitmen (three seasons) Vancouver Giants (three seasons). Across his 241-game career, he recorded 82 goals and 93 assists.

Nielsen will be a great addition in the bottom-six role for the Eagles with the capability of a top-six role. His scrappy play makes him a pest and difficult to play against. At just 5’10″, he is an undersized and hardworking forward.

With the Colorado Eagles’ system, Nielsen will get plenty of experience in every situation.  His style of play will become especially useful on the penalty kill where the Eagles need to plan for Colorado Avalanche call-ups. experience in the playoffs will come in handy during the stretch at the end of the year as well.
