The Colorado Avalanche were selected to play outdoors as one of the two teams in the 2027 Winter Classic, hosted by the Utah Mammoth. The game will take place on a date yet to be determined. Further information regarding tickets and time will also be determined at a later date.

Surprisingly, it will be the first Winter Classic Colorado will take part in ever. This will be the first outdoor game the Mammoth take part in as well.

The historic matchup will take place on the campus of the University of Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. This will be Colorado’s fourth outdoor game, third in front of fans.

Avalanche outdoors game history

Colorado hosted an outdoor game against the Detroit Red Wings on February 27, 2016 against the Detroit Red Wings at Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. The Avs would fall 5–3 with goals from Nathan MacKinnon, Tyson Barrie, and Alex Tanguay.

On February 15, 2020, the Avs hosted once again at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. They played the Los Angeles Kings and also lost 3–1, with the lone goal coming from Sam Girard. Tyler Toffoli scored a hat trick for LA.

The lone outdoor win for the Avalanche came on February 20, 2021, at Lake Tahoe. The serene backdrop was a sight to behold, and something we might never see again because of the lack of fans, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After an infamous eight-hour delay because of sunlight melting the ice, the Avs took it to the Vegas Golden Knights. Goals again from Girard, MacKinnon, and Devon Toews vaulted them to a 3–2 win.

With the Dallas Stars playing in a Stadium Series game in 2027 as well, folks thought Colorado might be in the running to play at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. However, this will take them out of the running to play at Jerry’s World.

This new budding rivalry across the Rocky Mountains with Utah will get even better outdoors. Mark those calendars, as it won’t be an event to miss!
