The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Taylor Makar to a two-year extension. With the extension, Makar will avoid hitting free agency this summer and, most importantly, arbitration. This extends the forward through the 2027–28 season. Makar’s contract shifts from two-way in the coming year to one-way the year after. Now that Taylor’s contract is completed, the Avs can concentrate on big brother Cale. The defenseman will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but he can re-sign as early as July 1st of this year.

Taylor Makar in the NHL

Taylor became an important part of the organization early on this past season. As a power forward, Taylor brings a heavy game and a scoring threat that most forwards cannot bring. He played 12 games early in the season for the Avalanche, getting better with each game. Making his NHL debut on November 1, 2025, in San Jose, he saw his last NHL action in early February. Unfortunately, Makar ended his NHL stint with no points on the scoresheet.

Taylor with the Eagles

Makar spent most of the season with the AHL-affiliate Colorado Eagles. In 54 regular-season games with the Eagles, he tallied 14 goals and 10 assists. During the playoffs, Makar added two goals and four assists. He often would find the crease down the wall and use his big body to drive to the net. Head coach Mark Letestu often would take advantage of his size for that specific role and power the Eagles ahead during games.

Taylor’s extension benefits Avalanche in several ways. They maintain a large body threat ready for call-up whenever needed. It also keeps size on the Eagles’ side. During the playoffs, the Eagles were often the smaller team, so having Taylor Makar around to hit helped. This could also encourage his older brother to re-sign with the Avalanche a lot sooner. Now that Taylor has re-signed, it takes the question away for Cale if they are going to be split up. Cale was often in Loveland watching his little brother play whenever there was time. So Taylor still being with the Avs will have a major impact on Cale.
