One question that is floating around now that Logan O’Connor is nearing a return is: who will sit? The fourth line for the Colorado Avalanche showcases a pairing of two rookies. Both Gavin Brindley and Zakhar Bardakov have been playing on the wing and center, respectively. However, given Parker Kelly’s presence, which rookie must sit? The answer is obvious, and he is making it difficult to sit him in any situation, and that is Gavin Brindley.

The Avalanche acquired Brindley in exchange for Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood. The Avalanche also acquired two draft picks along with Brindley. Not only did this open up cap space, but it gave the Avalanche picks that they had traded away to build up their depth. So far, Brindley’s worth has exceeded expectations. Most thought he would report to the Colorado Eagles. But he has performed better than expected to keep his position. Because of a concussion, he missed just two games.

The rookie has three goals and two assists in his 14 games played. That may not seem like much, but Brindley has 1.8 above goals expected. He also has 1.43 goals per 60 minutes that he plays (compared to Bardakov’s .88). Brindley is seeing more chances on net by averaging 7.65 shots per 60 minutes played to Bardakov’s 6.14. I know half a shot doesn’t seem like much, but added up over 12 forwards it can total is 17 more shots per game throughout the lineup.

Both Bardakov and Brindly play a gritty and fast game. But Brindly’s game seems to accelerate at a faster rate than Bardakov’s. The Russian is playing well, just the numbers show Brindley is playing slightly better. The decision shouldn’t prove difficult upon O’Connor’s return at month’s end. Keep Gavin Brindley in the lineup.
