The Colorado Avalanche have locked down Martin Necas to a new long-term contract. They signed a new deal on Thursday morning, spanning eight years with a cap hit of $11.5 million AAV. His contract includes $60 million in signing bonuses and a full no-move clause in the first seven years.

What this means

After the debacle of the Mikko Rantanen extension, or lack thereof, the Avs made sure this didn’t carry over for very long. The Avs traded Rantanen away, receiving Necas from the Carolina Hurricanes; Necas will now remain in Colorado for the foreseeable future.

Necas is in the final year of his current two-year deal worth $6.5 million. This new contract will take effect at the start of the 202627 season, with the cap continuing to rise.

The Czech forward has played in 41 regular-season games for the Avalanche, with 18 goals and 23 assists. In the seven-game series against the Dallas Stars, he added a goal and four assists. The 6-foot-3 forward will represent his country in the Olympics this February. He’ll likely play against some of his fellow Avs teammates.

Jared Bednar, Chris MacFarland, and Joe Sakic will hope he continues his dominant start to the season. The anticipation is that he carries it through the next eight years.

The 26-year-old will be 34 and due for a new contract after the conclusion of the 2033-34 season. Averaging a point a game and playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon, Artturi Lehkonen, and Valeri Nichushkin on the top line, the organization hopes Necas will continue to light it up and produce at the same pace he has been.

As a result, the core of the squad is ready to push for another Stanley Cup. Now, the Avalanche can focus on the next big fish due for a contract, which is Cale Makar.
