The Colorado Avalanche made another solidifying move, signing Scott Wedgewood to a one-year contract extension. His new deal will expire at the end of the 2026-27 season, worth $2.5 million.

Wedgewood came into a wounded Avs side last season when it came to netminding. With Alexandar Georgiev having issues and Justus Annunen unable to clean up the mess made, the Avs turned to Wedgewood.

They acquired the 33-year-old Canadian from the Nashville Predators, and he has been a brilliant addition. With Mackenzie Blackwood coming into the fray, the Lumberyard stiffed the competition in the second half of last season.

The start of this season has been no different for Wedgewood. He’s been the starter for the Avalanche with Blackwood recovering from offseason surgery. Wedgie has answered the bell thus far to open the 2025–26 season.

In 14 games, he has 10 wins with a 2.26 goals against average (GAA) and a .913 save percentage (SV%). Both the GAA and SV% he’s put up are higher than his career averages.

This spurs questions about prospect goaltenders such as Trent Miner, who has appeared in two games this season in burgundy and blue this season. What does this mean for his future? Will he be stuck in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles for the foreseeable future, despite signing a new contract over the summer?

What does this mean for highly drafted and highly-touted Ilya Nabokov? He’s had his own struggles in the KHL this season and was eyeing a move over to North America after the conclusion of the KHL season this spring.

Wedgewood will continue locking down the blue paint for Colorado for the next couple of seasons. If his hot start to the season continues, he could easily be the front-runner for the starting position and beat out Blackwood.
