CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Fans of the Colorado Avalanche may have something to worry about as the season unfolds. The Avalanche have not played a single game, and the injuries are already piling up. Everyone knew about Logan O’Connor, who had hip surgery during the summer, but there are a few other names that we can add to the list. And some of them may be concerning.
Mackenzie Blackwood
The Avalanche number one goaltender has not skated with the team all week. On Friday morning, Blackwood was on the ice with goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila doing drills. During one of these drills, Blackwood tried to push off his right leg and made an audible sound I could hear from the stands. He has also not taken any shots, a sign that he is not healthy enough to make quick movements.
Samuel Girard
The defenseman was not present at any of the optional skates from August 17 to Thursday. On Friday morning, Girard was out on the ice in a red non-contact sweater. He was under the watchful eye of the trainer and skating carefully. So the injury could be lower-body.
There is a lot of red on the ice this morning. Samuel Girard is skating on his own under the watchful eye of a trainer. On the other end, we have Logan O'Connor, Taylor Makar, and Jake Wise. #Avs #GoAvsGo #EaglesCountry @HockeyMtnHighCO pic.twitter.com/0q43MtkkAk

Taylor Makar
The Maine Blackbear alum came to Rookie Camp with an injury, and the Avalanche announced he would not be playing in the games. I have information that suggests that Makar has an upper-body injury, but have not gotten an update from the Colorado Eagles yet.
Jake Wise
The forward played the entire season for the Eagles after earning a contract with a professional tryout. He became a key piece in their power play and top-six, and they signed him to a new contract early in the summer on an AHL deal. Although his injury is unclear, it is concerning. The Eagles’ offensive depth will suffer without him in the lineup.
This is not the best way to start the season, but hockey is a game where injuries happen. If the Avalanche have to start the year without their starting goaltender, they will have difficulty getting any traction. Updates will probably come out in the next few days from the team officially, but it is something to monitor.
