Kaapo Kähkönen has quite an eventful year. He has been one of the most well-travelled goalies in the AHL, playing for three different teams this season. This is not to mention his one game in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche.

Kähkönen started the year in the Winnipeg Jets’ organization, playing for the AHL Manitoba Moose in the Central Division. Just one day into the season, the Avalanche claimed Kähkönen off of waivers. He would spend roughly the next month in the Avalanche organization, playing three games total.

The Finn started with the Colorado Eagles, where he played two solid games against the Calgary Wranglers. Kähkönen had a 2.57 goals allowed average with a .917 save percentage. He was good enough to earn a chance with the big club the following week. Colorado struggled to put pucks in the back of the net for him, scoring only two goals to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s five. Ten days later, the Avalanche placed Kähkönen on waivers, and the Jets claimed him back.

He played 22 games for the Moose before he was involved in a trade with the Florida Panthers. The Panthers sent Chris Driedger north, while Kähkönen went to the Charlotte Checkers. The move would turn into the best thing that happened to Kähkönen since the Moose did not make the playoffs. Kähkönen rode a hot Charlotte team into the Calder Cup Playoffs and has not looked back since. Eight out of his 14 wins came while playing for Charlotte while racking up 2.91 goals allowed average and .894 save percentage in the regular season.

Kähkönen is currently in the Calder Cup Finals with the Charlotte Checkers as their starting goaltender. He is playing against the Abbotsford Canucks (VAN) and is down three games to one.
